Elon Musk Announces Launch of Encrypted DMs for Twitter Blue Subscribers

Encrypted DMs for Twitter Blue Subscribers

Twitter boss Elon Musk on Thursday announced the introduction of encrypted direct conversations on the social media network, something he had claimed the business was working on.

“An early version of encrypted direct messages has just been released.” Try it, but don’t trust it yet,” Musk posted in a tweet.
On Tuesday, Musk had disclosed other soon-to-be-incorporated features in the micro-blogging site, including audio and video call, and DM (direct message) answers to messages on a thread.

There are certain limitations to Twitter’s encrypted communications capability. For example, the encryption option is opt-in and not enabled by default. Furthermore, it is only available to verified users, which implies that to send encrypted DMs, you must be a verified business on Twitter, a government official, or a Twitter Blue member.

Musk’s encrypted conversations, according to a report in the US-based tech journal Wired, do not prevent’man-in-the-middle’ attacks. This means that third parties can manipulate and snoop on the messages. The corporation has also avoided using the term “end-to-end encrypted,” which refers to a system of encryption in which only the sender and receiver can access messages, like WhatsApp does. Encryption does not work for group messages or visual assets, according to the research.

Musk has already spoken out about the need of internet privacy.
“With the latest version of the app, you can DM reply to any message in the thread (not just the most recent) and use any emoji reaction,” he tweeted on Tuesday. The release of encrypted DMs V1.0 is scheduled for tomorrow. This will rapidly advance in sophistication. The litmus test is that even with a pistol to my head, I couldn’t read your DMs. Voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform will be available shortly, allowing you to communicate with individuals all over the world without giving them your phone number.”

Musk announced the removal of dormant accounts from Twitter on Monday, while also warning users that their following count may decrease.
