Instagram Testing Option to Turn Off Read Receipts for DMs

Instagram is currently testing a feature that allows users to turn off read receipts for direct messages. This means that when you read a message, the person who sent it won’t be notified that you’ve seen it. Instagram Head Adam Mosseri announced this feature in a message, stating that users will soon have the option to choose when others can see if they’ve read their messages.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also mentioned this change, noting that it will be beneficial for those who often get “left on read.” A screenshot shared by Mosseri shows a toggle in the Instagram Privacy & Safety menu that allows users to enable or disable read receipts.

This change is aimed at improving privacy and reducing stress. While read receipts can be helpful in knowing if someone has seen your message, they don’t provide details like whether the person briefly glanced at it or intentionally ignored it. Being “left on read” can cause anxiety, especially when it’s done intentionally.
