Instagram Working on an AI Friend Feature

Instagram is reportedly working on a new feature called “AI friend” that allows users to create a customizable chatbot. Users can customize the chatbot’s gender, age, ethnicity, and personality traits. They can also select the chatbot’s interests to shape its conversations. Once the customization is done, users can chat with the AI friend to ask questions, discuss challenges, brainstorm ideas, and more.

It’s uncertain if or when the feature will be released to the public or if there will be further changes during the development process. Instagram has declined to comment on the matter.

Developing an AI chatbot marketed as a “friend” comes with risks. Generative AI can sometimes deceive users into thinking they are interacting with a real person, raising concerns about vulnerability to manipulation or disappointment. Experts emphasize the need for transparency and awareness that users are interacting with AI, not humans, to protect against these risks.

The development of the “AI friend” feature comes amid controversies surrounding AI chatbots in recent times. Other social platforms have faced mixed results with AI chatbot launches, with concerns raised about appropriate age-gating features and inappropriate conversations with minors.

While it’s unclear which AI tools Instagram will use for the “AI friend” feature, its parent company Meta has already begun incorporating generative AI technology into its apps. Meta recently launched 28 AI chatbots across Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp, some of which are represented by notable personalities.

Unlike the interactive AI personas, the “AI friend” chatbot appears to facilitate open-ended conversations, offering users a broader range of topics to discuss.
