Is iPhone 14 Waterproof?

by | Nov 7, 2023

Just like the newer versions of iPhone 11 and beyond, the iPhone 14 series also has water resistance and an IP68 rating. But what exactly does this rating mean? Is iPhone 14 waterproof? And can the iPhone 14 withstand water even without a case? Here’s all the information you need to know about IP ratings and how well the iPhone 14 performs when submerged in water.

What is iPhone’s IP Rating?

IP rating, which stands for Ingress Protection rating, is a standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is used to determine how well electronic devices can resist the entry of liquids and solid objects like dust.

An IP rating consists of two numbers. The first number indicates the device’s level of protection against solid objects, while the second number indicates its level of protection against liquids. Also read How to Get Water out of iPhone Charging Port: Do’s and Don’ts.

For the first number:

  • A rating of 0 means there is no protection against solid objects.
  • Ratings from 1 to 6 indicate varying degrees of protection against different sizes of solid objects.
  • A rating of 7 means the device is protected against dust.
  • A rating of 8 indicates complete protection against dust.

For the second number:

  • A rating of 0 means there is no protection against liquids.
  • Ratings from 1 to 8 indicate different levels of water resistance, ranging from protection against dripping water to full immersion in water.

IP Rating

Here, you can see the IP rating of iPhones.

iPhone ModelIP ValueTime and Depth
Apple iPhone 6 and older
Apple iPhone 7 (Plus), 8 (Plus), X, Xr, and SE 2IP67Up to 30 minutes and 1 meter deep
Apple iPhone Xs (Max), 11IP68Up to 30 minutes and 2 meters deep
Apple iPhone 11 Pro (Max)IP68Up to 30 minutes and 4 meters deep
Apple iPhone 12 (Mini), 12 Pro (Max), 13 (Mini), 13 Pro (Max), 14 (Plus), 14 Pro (Max)IP68Up to 30 minutes and 6 meters deep
Apple iPhone 14 ProIP68Water Resistant up to 30 minutes and 6 meters deep

An IP67-rated iPhone is resistant to dust and can survive being submerged in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. On the other hand, an IP68-rated iPhone can withstand being immersed in up to 6 meters of water for the same duration.

It’s important to note that while IP ratings provide general guidelines, they do not guarantee absolute protection against water damage. Other factors like water pressure and temperature can still affect the device’s performance in water. Therefore, it’s wise to exercise caution and not intentionally expose your iPhone to liquids. *Prior to the iPhone 7, Apple did not provide official IP ratings for their devices. This means that iPhone models released before the iPhone 7, such as the iPhone 6 and older, do not have a specific IP rating for dust and water resistance.

Is iPhone 14 Waterproof? No, it’s water resistant!

If you want to know the answer to this question first you should know the difference between waterproof and water resistant.

Is iPhone 14 Waterproof

A water-resistant device is built to handle some exposure to water, but it’s not meant to stay submerged for a long time. In contrast, a waterproof device can still function even when completely submerged in water. However, even among waterproof devices, there are varying levels of waterproofing and different time limits for submersion. This creates a bit of a gray area between water-resistant and waterproof devices.

iPhone 14 is not completely waterproof, but it is water-resistant to a certain extent.

The iPhone 14 series, which includes the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, has an IP68 rating. As we mentioned earlier in this post, this rating is a measure of its resistance to dust and water, and it’s based on a standard set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The “IP68” rating means that these devices are highly resistant to dust (the “6” rating is the highest level of dust resistance). It also indicates that they can be submerged in fresh water up to a maximum depth of six meters (which is about 19 feet) for a maximum duration of 30 minutes (the “8” rating is the highest for water resistance).

Is iPhone 14 Waterproof

While the water resistance of the iPhone 14 is impressive, it’s important to understand its limitations. Apple explicitly states that water damage is not covered under warranty. Therefore, it’s advisable not to intentionally submerge your iPhone 14 in water, including taking underwater photos.

This means that the iPhone 14 is not completely protected if it’s dropped in a river, lake, or ocean. It’s also not recommended to expose it to high moisture environments like showers or saunas, as its water resistance is a last line of defense. Accidental damage should always be avoided.

Which iPhone Model is Fully Waterproof?

All iPhone models, including the latest iPhone 15 models and the iPhone 14 series, are made to be water-resistant. However, it’s important to know that water resistance can weaken over time and is not a permanent feature.
