Twitter Will Soon Support Phone Calls and Encrypted Messages

Elon Musk, CEO of Twitter Inc, announced details about new capabilities coming to the platform on Tuesday, including calls and encrypted chat.

Musk hinted at plans for “Twitter 2.0 The Everything App” last year, promising encrypted direct messages (DMs), longform tweets, and payments.

“Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number,” Musk stated on Tuesday in a tweet.

The call feature on Twitter will put the microblogging site in line with similar services on Meta’s social media apps, Facebook and Instagram.

Musk stated that an encrypted version of direct messaging will be available on Twitter beginning Wednesday, but he did not specify if calls will be encrypted.

Twitter announced this week that it will begin a cleanup effort by deleting and archiving accounts that have been inactive for several years.
